PhD scholarship opportunity: Social, economic and environmental pathways to a carbon neutral livestock sector by 2030
The Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture invites applicants for a fully funded tuition plus living allowance PhD scholarship. The successful candidate will join a national research consortium that are developing demand-driven skills, practices and technologies for mitigation of agricultural greenhouse gas emissions. The candidate will conduct research in three broad areas of (1) emissions avoidance, (2) carbon sequestration and (3) integrated management systems. The scope of the PhD is very flexible, but part of degree will include measurements of soil carbon and work towards improving the ability of contemporary models to simulate soil carbon.
Other modelling as part of the PhD may include and examination of the effects of climate change on pasture-based areas and rangelands and the efficacy of trees and shelter belts for carbon sequestration. Outputs may include productivity co-benefits, profitability and greenhouse gas emissions under current and future climates. The successful candidate will be partly involved in workshops with farmers and industry and will be expected to travel domestically as part of the research team (subject to COVID-19 travel restrictions).
The candidate will have experience with modelling and an understanding of crop and livestock production systems. The candidate will be required to relocate to Tasmania, Australia after international COVID-19 travel restrictions ease.
