On February 10, 2026, a delegation from High Agriculture Technology Research Institute for Mekong Delta (HATRI) attended a workshop on testing salt-tolerant rice varieties in Kanh Lam Commune, Ca Mau Province – one of the areas most severely affected by saltwater intrusion in the Mekong Delta.

The event is part of the project titled “Production of rice varieties to optimize growth in the Mekong Delta and other regions under climate change conditions,” funded by Vinfuture and officially launched in November 2025.
The workshop included representatives from the Ca Mau Agricultural Extension Center, the head of the seed station, and technical staff from the seed station. From HATRI, attendees included Prof. Dr. Nguyễn Thị Lang (Director), Prof. Dr. Bùi Chí Bửu, and the project research team.

The project focuses on field-testing 15 promising rice varieties selected and bred by HATRI, aimed at good adaptation to high salinity intrusion conditions. These varieties are suitable for the rice-shrimp farming model and areas experiencing alternating drought and salinity in Ca Mau. The list of varieties under testing includes: HATRI 22, HATRI 608, HATRI 611, HATRI 675, HATRI 806, HATRI 917, HATRI 923, HATRI 927, HATRI 400, HATRI 935, HATRI 929, HATRI 924, HATRI 921, HATRI 80, HATRI 20.
The workshop marks an important initial step in monitoring and evaluating these varieties under real production conditions in Ca Mau. The testing results will serve as the basis for transferring the varieties to farmers, contributing to building sustainable agriculture and mitigating risks from climate change in saline-affected regions.
