On the morning of February 18, 2025, the High Agricultural Technology Research Institute fỏ Mekong Delta (HATRI) successfully organized the Scientific Workshop on Rice Variety Evaluation for Climate Change Adaptation in the Mekong Delta for the Winter-Spring 2024-2025 crop in Binh Thuy District, Cantho City.
The workshop was attended by representatives from various departments, agencies, experts, and media in Can Tho and the Mekong Delta, including:
• Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Long An
• Long An Agricultural Service Center, Long An Plant Protection Sub-Department
• Can Tho Union of Science and Technology Associations, Can Tho Women's Union
• Can Tho Crop Production & Plant Protection Sub-Department
• An Giang Department of Science & Technology, An Giang Agricultural Extension Center, An Giang Plant Protection Sub-Department
• Chau Phu District Agricultural Extension Station, Vinh Long Seed Center
• Vinh Long Television, Can Tho Television
Annually, HATRI maintains and demonstrates rice varieties bred by the institute with high yield, superior quality, and resistance to pests and adverse environmental conditions. The breeding program focuses on varieties suitable for export, saline and flood tolerance, while also introducing glutinous rice varieties.
Field evaluations showed that the tested rice varieties grew well, exhibited strong resistance to pests, and had no lodging issues, demonstrating good adaptation to the conditions of the Winter-Spring 2025 season. The rice varieties developed by HATRI are expected to support sustainable farming practices, reduce emissions, and enhance climate change resilience in the Mekong Delta.
Following the evaluation process, the workshop selected the top five most promising rice varieties, ranked as follows:
1. HATRI 10
2. HATRI 192
3. HATRI 20
4. HATRI 190
5. HATRI 25
These rice varieties are expected to play a key role in climate-resilient rice cultivation in the Mekong Delta.
