On the morning of August 15, 2025, the High Technology Agriculture Research Institute for Mekong Delta (HATRI) successfully organized a scientific workshop titled “Evaluation of Rice Varieties Adapted to Climate Change in the Mekong Delta” for the 2025 Summer-Autumn crop season in Thoi An Dong Ward, Can Tho City.
The workshop was attended by representatives from various organizations, including the Can Tho City Union of Science and Technology Associations, the An Giang Province Department of Science and Technology, the An Giang Biotechnology Center, the Tay Ninh Agriculture Department, the Center for Science, Technology, and Digital Transformation under the An Giang Department of Science and Technology, the Can Tho Plant Protection Department, and Vipesco Company. Additionally, the event was recorded by Can Tho Television and Vinh Long Television.
The rice variety evaluation workshop is an annual activity of HATRI, focusing on testing and demonstrating rice varieties developed and crossbred by the HATRI. These rice and glutinous rice varieties are primarily developed for high quality, pest and disease resistance, and adaptability to adverse conditions such as acidity, drought, and salinity. Notably, in the current context, HATRI has prioritized the development of low-emission rice varieties. Some prominent low-emission rice varieties published include HATRI 25, HATRI 9, HATRI 20, HATRI 22, HATRI 169, HATRI 174, HATRI 31, and HATRI 47.
During the workshop, HATRI showcased promising rice lines/varieties, including sets of acid-tolerant, salt-tolerant, drought-tolerant, glutinous rice, and other promissing rice lines/varieties. Through the evaluation process, six outstanding rice varieties were selected: HATRI 25, HATRI 193, HATRI 144, HATRI 722, HATRI 20, and HATRI 90.
Participants highly appreciated HATRI’s efforts in rice breeding and expressed their hope that the institute would soon disseminate these rice varieties to farmers in the Mekong Delta in particular and across the country in general.
